About LiPS

The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPS) is a structured, multisensory approach designed to improve phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. This skill is foundational for reading and spelling, yet rarely taught in schools because teachers are not trained in it and requires one-on-work with students.

LiPS can work for any learner struggling with reading but I especially like it for students with dyslexia and similar language-based learning disabilities because of its emphasis on giving students concrete, physical strategies. LiPS helps uses blocks, mirrors, and manipulatives to help learners recognize how sounds feel in their mouths when spoken, using tactile and kinesthetic feedback to anchor auditory information. By engaging multiple senses—seeing, hearing, feeling, and speaking—students are able to build a stronger, more reliable internal map of sound structures, which supports accurate decoding and word recognition.

I have worked with students who were able to improve from an early elementary school to high school reading level using this system.
